Middle Schoolers love to talk about themselves! This lesson introduces a claim that there is a positive correlation between the day of the month you are born on and how impulsive you are. Students write down the day of the month they were born on, and take a short quiz to calculate their "impulse" score. They interview each other to gather data, and create a scatterplot of the data. Then, they decide whether the correlation is positive, negative, or not there at all.
Different students end up with different conclusions, which brings up great discussions about data. Discussions around "outliers" is good too. My 8th and 9th graders loved this activity! After the activity was complete and a discussion was had, this lesson could take anywhere from 30-45 minutes, depending on your students and how you construct the activity. Enjoy!
