What are the challenges?
A STEM Challenge featuring a bucket has turned out to be one of our favorites and your students will love it, too! This challenge is to build a tower (although not a very tall one) that will hold weight. Students have the goal of suspending a “bucket” within the tower and that bucket must hold weight. The best part is listening to groups explain why their towers need a bucket. Imaginative answers are one of the high points of this challenge- along with seeing those creative bucket towers!
Students will be challenged to find a way to use the straws to hold the bucket as it gets heavier and heavier when weights are added. They will make on-the-spot adjustments as they see weak points of the tower buckle or collapse. It’s engineering at its best!
★ You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes straws, string, masking tape, hole punchers, small cups, and scissors.
Kids love to build towers! It becomes a competition and this one is quite challenging, as well! It features a tennis ball and some wacky rules about height and the materials!
This STEM challenge features the task of using given supplies to design and build a tower. Specific criteria for the tower includes supporting an object a specific height off the table and using ALL the supplies. The supplies needed are very simple and easy to gather. Stand back and watch them construct! Students record their thinking on lab sheets or a folding graphic organizer- both of which can be used with your Science Interactive Notebooks. BONUS: This resource now has an alternative version of completing the tower!
The package specifically contains Cover sheet, Teacher Background,
1-page Materials and Prep list, 5 pages of Teacher directions with helpful hints, Set of Criteria cards for students (with and without background color), Full page display of the task constraints, Lab Sheet, Folding Graphic Organizer page with a photo page of folding instructions, 4 pages of Tower Photos with more details, Scoring rubric,
★ Supplies needed in addition to this package include straws, craft sticks, coffee stir sticks, tennis balls, masking tape, string, and a container for each group’s supplies. Of course, substitutions can be made for any of these!
Who knew a STEM Challenge using spaghetti could be so engaging? Kids love this one! It's a tower building event using the unlikeliest of materials- spaghetti and one marshmallow. Just how tall and skinny can you make this tower and still support the weight of that one object?
This package is jam-packed full of teacher directions, lab sheets, hints, and photos. The original challenge includes two versions of lab sheets.
This challenge pack now contains 2 bonus lessons! Check the preview to see the Bell Tower Challenge. It is very similar to the Spaghetti Challenge but is a challenge you can use especially at Christmas time. Directions, helpful hints, constraints, lab sheets, and photos of the Bell Tower are all now included.
There is also a Blueprint Version of the challenge which includes special directions, hints, photos, constraints, and lab sheets. A separate file contains Scoring Rubrics that can be used for the many versions.
But, there is even more! Another file contains editable pages for the forms- which includes the constraints and lab sheets.
And, what if you are like me and forget to buy the marshmallows? I added a page of photos and tips for using an alternative to the marshmallow that was really challenging and added a new problem to solve!
★ You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes spaghetti, marshmallows, tape, and string. Students also need scissors.
This a fun design challenge and is, by far, the activity my lab students most request to do again!
Each of these challenges may be purchased separately. Each is also included in different bundles. Be sure you check the individual listings for the these and take a look at the previews!
