This is the quarter 4 writing unit I developed that is used as a fun culminating project including 4 pieces of each writing genre (narrative, opinion, informative-describing, explaining,& compare/contrast) . The TE unit copy includes suggestions, standards and D.O.K. (Depth Of Knowledge) levels. The students’ copy does not. My cohort and I mix our kids together to form heterogeneous groups. Some years we say they are writing to earn points to escape from Bear Island (our mascot) and some years we use Pig Latin with our names (Arnscay Island). We use Gordon Korman’s Island book series (children survive a boating accident and wash ashore on a deserted island) as a read-aloud to go along with the unit. Our rooms are decorated for the island theme. We end the unit with a tribal celebration. We have them march into the room carrying their tribe’s flag to the music of The Lion King. The 2 tribes from each class that earn the most writing points choose a member to read their final essay to persuade the elders to choose their tribe to escape the island and return to civilization. As you can see in the picture in the samples, we take our job as the tribal elders very seriously! Also included are the notebook cover to make student journals, 2 different Escape Bear Island award certificates, a banner for a bulletin board, 2 different kinds of rubrics to choose from, a Depth of Knowledge Chart. This can be used as a culminating unit (4 weeks) or use the different activities throughout the school year after teaching each of the writing genres. Use all of the writing activities or choose what you like and have time for!
