Product Description
This is a great Fall/Halloween themed activity to follow the common core encouraging students to write their thinking as they solve story problems.
In this unit the student will be given a ten’s frame and 3 candy corn. The student must add the candy corn to the ten’s frame and determined what their equation will be. It could be 10-3=7 or 10-3=3 or 3+7=10 or 7+3=10. The student will then write a story problem using their number sentence and ‘candy corn’. The student will have to come up with a question. They will also have to determine their problem will be the result unknown, change unknown or start unknown.
The student will then answer the question and explain their thinking. They need to walk the reader step by step of how they came up with the answer.

The last part of the unit allows the student to think of words to describe their candy corn. This brainstorming activity could be whole group. Give each student 1-3 pieces of Candy Corn to eat and help them think of words. Then each student will choose words from their word bank to write a descriptive story.
