Students working with the Common Core State Standards are expected to spend 50% of their time reading informational text. This product provides a FUN way to work with informational text. Students will become detectives at I.T. Academy. There are three different academies, each with the same stories but at different lexile levels for easy differentiation. Some famous female singers have been kidnapped! Students will be provided with a one page Case File about each singer. The criminals have provided Clue Cards about their victims and it is up to the students to find evidence in the Case File text to prove the clues are true. If successful, students earn Solved It! Stickers to add to their detective dossier. They earn different detective ranks for the number of solved cases. Students will be named Expert Detectives once they’ve solved all 12 cases and also identify which singer was kidnapped by each criminal using Criminal Cards.
Students will have so much fun they won’t know they’ll be practicing close reading, supporting answers with evidence from the text, using reasoning skills, and practicing skills such as text structure and text features.
My fourth graders were my test audience for this product. They have declared it FUN! It was a student who suggested I add the feature of finding out who the kidnaper was!
Follow my store to be notified when I add additional sets to this program. I have plans for sets about, Presidents, famous women, famous African Americans, and even animals. Sets can be mixed together to allow students the choice of the subject they want to investigate.
