Fun With Sight Words
If your Seconds are like mine, they get pretty sick of sight word flash cards in hurry! This Power Point Presentation offers you an alternative. It is made up of the 125 sight words taught in the 2nd Grade Saxon Phonics program (each lesson is designated by a different color background, in the order presented in the program), but are the same words found on the Dolch and Fry lists, making them appropriate for any classroom.
What do you have to do? Open the file and click away! Each click will bring up a different word. There are three activities, each using different animation, allowing for lots of practice without getting stale. Your kids can Bounce, Swivel, and Zoom to master basic vocabulary!
A Couple of Suggestions
125 Words Before Lunch (or Technology, or recess, or going home…)
My kids love this one. They line up and take turns reading words. After their turn, they head to the back of the line, ready for another turn. I don’t make my kids sit down if they miss one; they can ask a friend for help, or I may prompt (that ough thing is ridiculous!) them to get them started.
Partner them up and let them whisper the words to each other. My kids really stink at whispering so I always know when someone makes a mistake, allowing for correction. If your kids are good whisperers, (Congratulations!) you might want to rethink this idea.
I randomly pull Popsicle sticks so kids never know when their turn will come.
With no intention of keeping score, I divide them into two teams. They alternate reading the words. They’re learnin’ so I win.
Use them whole group or for small group remediation.
