In this unit, students will practice using elements of fiction by writing their own short story. They will be led through the process with a series of mini-lessons, idea generating writing activities, and then through drafting, revising and editing. Optional writing group work is also included.
This unit can be done with students from grades 6 (or possibly younger) through 10. The lessons in this unit include extensive modeling which can be minimized or deleted for older students.
My students (Grades 8 through 10) enjoy this unit, and it helps them strengthen their understanding of how authors approach the elements of fiction (conflict, character, setting, plot, theme and point of view) since they are using them in their own writing as well as identifying them in literature.
This unit can be done in about ten days or can take longer depending on how much writing is done in class, and on whether exploration of literature is being done simultaneously with the writing. It includes a grading rubric as well as material that can be used for some of the activities.
Please note: Before printing be aware that pages 21-30 include numerous color images which can be used for some of the writing activities.
