I am always trying to find a new and fun way for my kids to practice sight words and becoming more fluent in their reading skills. This great game gives them lots of practice and repetition in functional sight words, and they have no idea they are learning! That's the best part!
This game uses functional sight words that include:
Days of the Week
Months of the Year
common schedule words (reading, lunch, recess, etc.)
common food words (pizza, cookie, juice, etc.)
common classroom items (crayon, pencil, eraser)
There is a total of 74 functional sight words.
Here is how to play the game:
(Cut and laminate cards for durability)
Place cards into a basket or bag. The first player takes a card and reads it. If they read their card correctly they get to keep their card. If they are incorrect their card goes back into the bag. Play continues until a player gets the BAM! card. If a player gets BAM! then they get to collect the cards of the players on the left and right of them. Play continues. If a player gets a SAFE card, they get to keep it. The SAFE card will keep them safe in the event their neighbor gets a BAM! card so they will not have to give up their cards. Each time the BAM! card or SAFE card get used the teacher can chose to add it back to the bag or continue playing with those cards set aside. The player with the most cards wins!
Also included are some variations to the game to make it slightly harder for students that have an easier time with the words.
