Description

This exploration gives students a context in which to apply their knowledge of functions and function rules. It involves 4 different scenarios of students collecting pennies. Each student starts off with a different amount of pennies and earns a different amount each day. For each scenario, they must fill in a table with ordered pairs, graph the ordered pairs, and then make predictions for future days. Discussions that may arise include how to predict for future days and the weaknesses of each approach. The goal is for students to create a rule for each scenario, compare and contrast each scenario, and discuss slope in context of the problem. This exploration also includes a function rule in which the student must create a penny jar problem and an exit ticket that requires the student to be able to connect the multiple representations of a function.
