These worksheets are designed for students to practice solving function machine problems. If you are using Everyday Math, this skill is taught in Chapter 5 of the first grade program.
Students use addition and subtraction strategies to solve the rule (addition or subtraction) and then apply the rule to remaining numbers in the chart. The first set of numbers indicates the rule (i.e. 5 goes “in” to the machine and 10 comes “out” of the machine indicates that the machine’s rule is +5).
There are 6 “machines” on each page. Set 1 contains easier problems and includes the rule for the first 2 problems. Each machine shows 2 “in” and “out” examples for the students to use when solving for the rule. They will apply the rule to 3 more numbers. Set 2 contains more challening problems, no rules are listed and only 1 set of “in” and “out” numbers is listed for solving the rule. Set. 3 is a generic sheet with no rules or numbers (this sheet can be customized). Finally, set 4 is a customizable HOMEWORK sheet with a line for an adult’s signature at the bottom.
Function machine problems provide your students will practice applying addition and subtraction problem solving skills.
A teacher's notes page is also included.
