Function Transformation Card Sort provides extra practice in identifying transformations of functions. The card sort addresses the Common Core State Standard in High School Functions:
CCSS.Math.Content.HSF-BF.B.3 Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) by f(x) + k, k f(x), f(kx), and f(x + k) for specific values ofk (both positive and negative); find the value of k given the graphs. Experiment with cases and illustrate an explanation of the effects on the graph using technology. Include recognizing even and odd functions from their graphs and algebraic expressions for them.
There are forty cards in this sort … 10 descriptions of functions, 10 general equations representing those transformations, 10 specific examples written as equations, and 10 specific examples displayed as graphs. Students can match the cards; and then create one example for each transformation of their own.
