Functional Formats are a form of Informational Text, with a clear functional purpose. Websites are included in this genre, along with brochures, advertisements, emails, letters, recipes, brochures, memos, lists, etc. While high-stakes testing often includes this genre, finding quality text and materials for teaching and learning can be difficult. And, since many functional formats have limited words, it might seem like an easy task to read and comprehend the text, however, many students need explicit instruction in this area. Providing scaffolded opportunities to explore this genre will help deepen comprehension.
Resource includes: Color and Black-and-White Versions of a Reproducible Website, User Guide, Multiple Choice Test-Based Comprehension Questions, QAR Comprehension Quick-Check, Creative Writing Planning Sheet and Response Page, Word Study Sort and Recording Sheet, and Homophones Worksheet. All answer sheets are included.
