The Functional Text Unit covers several different types of functional texts, from recipes to menus to nutritional labels. Three lesson plans briefly cover how to read various texts, and the bulk of the unit focuses on a critical thinking, real world application project.
In this unit, the students will pretend to be business consultants. They will analyze several different functional texts from an ice cream business, determine changes that would benefit the business, and write a business report explaining their decisions.
In addition to the three lesson plans and project plan are:
Project Instructions for students with a menu for product options
Functional texts (store hours, ice cream menu, nutrition labels, online comments, graph of customers vs. workers, chart of the amount sold of each flavor)
Evaluation questions for students to determine changes needed
Partner Evaluation Form
This unit is classroom tested! The students were engaged and excited to share their evaluations. You can differentiate instruction by selecting products from a choice board based on Bloom's Taxonomy, or choosing partners for students.
