This is a cooperative group, 2-3 day task that will challenge students to APPLY knowledge of many algebraic concepts. If your administrators are looking to evaluate you for student led discussion and teacher questioning...this is a great activity to use. Announced or even unannounced observations coming up? Just print this off and have copies on hand. It will cover your questioning and grouping evaluation areas very well.
It is built around a popular trend among 8th graders right now...making rubber band bracelets. I have applied our 8th grade algebraic standards to a concrete, real world situation that they are familiar with. Values for input and output represent start up costs, earnings, profit, or the number of bracelets sold. All pages are PDF. Answer key included.
Students will demonstrate mastery of creating and evaluating
*sets of coordinate points
*basic function notation with f(x)
*identifying linear and non linear functions
*changing equations in standard form to slope intercept form
*identifying proportional vs non proportional functions.
It is an all inclusive resource for assessment or guided practice. It could be used as a cooperative group activity, or an individual assessment.
All of the tasks within this assignment involve creating or analyzing information. There are no multiple choice questions. Dividing the class into cooperative groups will allow you to choose what level of discovery you are comfortable with within each group. There are 7 pages for students and the rest are informational for the teacher. I have included a detailed answer key as well. All pages are PDF files.
