Music Therapy what question song for special needs individuals.
Goal: Client will answer what questions regarding the functions of items.
Domains: Language, Academics

Special needs kids can get confused with the variety of “WH” questions they are expected to answer. I used to work with a boy on the autism spectrum who had a crush on a classmate named Holly. When he got home, the mother would ask, “What did you do at school today?” The boy would always answer, “Holly.” The mom was asking a What Doing question – wanting a response of an Action, a Verb like learned, played, sang, etc. The boy gave a Who answer – a Person, Holly.

Person? Place? or Thing? The chorus of the song establishes that the answers to What questions are Things, as opposed to Who questions answered with People or Where questions answered with Places. Each question is repeated multiple times for students who need that processing time or who may have deficits in attention. The questions are structured so that the key nouns are the last words of the questions and therefore the last words heard before the student needs to answer. … Books? Backpack! … Door? Key! …Nose? Tissue! …Rain? Umbrella!

The sentence starter “I use a” allows verbal students to answer in a complete sentence and work on increasing length of utterance in a structured format. It also reinforces that fact that we use Things, not People or Places.

There are a total of 16 What questions. These are split into 4 videos, 4 questions per video. Each of these videos come in 3 versions for a total of 12 videos. 4 are teaching videos – the correct answers are sung and shown. 4 are receptive videos – the student must answer verbally or by pointing to a field of 4 potential answers. 4 are expressive videos – no answer choices are given and the child must answer verbally.

Songs are included with the download, 2 songs corresponding to each of the 4 sets of 4 questions, one with sung answers and one with the answers removed. There are also 3 songs with the question vocals removed, so that you can ask 4, 8, or 16 questions of your choosing.

The goal is for students to progress through the various versions of the videos and songs. You may begin with the teaching videos to allow students to get familiar with the structure of the song and the various questions and answers. Depending on the child you are working with, you may utilize the included question flashcards, answer visuals, or eventually even reach the point where no visual supports are needed. The hope is that after these questions are mastered, students will be able to answer novel questions that don’t necessarily fit the sentence starter: I use soap. I use a pair of scissors. I use what I’ve learned to answer new questions.
