Today's lesson covers various ways to recognize a relation and determine whether a set of ordered pairs is a function or a relation. They learn multiple ways to represent a function, as well as multiple ways to identify the differences between functions and relations. They understand the terms "input" and "output", they become masters at using the Vertical Line Test, and they learn to evaluate and graph a linear equation from functional notation. At the conclusion of the lesson, they will work through "real-life" problems that involve the migration of monarch butterflies; an example is demonstrated, and then the students work on an example of their own. Students are given multiple opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts presented in this lesson, and always seem to enjoy this introduction to "Functions and Relations"!.
