Teach students to write persuasively by giving them an authentic audience and a real world purpose! This unit includes graphic organizers with three levels of scaffolding, a rubric, and templates to guide students in writing a fundraising letter for a school trip or activity.

I created this unit last year when my 8th grade students did not have the funding to take their annual class trip to Washington, DC. My students were skeptical about the plan, but in three weeks time, their letter writing campaign raised $4,000 from donors in our local community.

Whether you are looking for a new approach to school fundraising or simply looking to shake up your persuasive writing unit, this resource will motivate and engage your students like never before! In this unit, students will learn the persuasive techniques used by real fundraising professionals to craft direct mail "asks", pre-write using graphic organizers with three levels of scaffolding, then craft their own fundraising letter to a donor in your community.

Included:

  • Mini-Lesson slides to teach students to write fundraising letters like the pros - including a version optimized for use with Pear Deck!
  • Bell Ringer Prompts
  • Three graphic organizers with guiding questions and sentence starters for differentiation
  • Peer Revising and Editing guide
  • Everything you need to organize a direct mail fundraiser, including sample letters, thank you card template, and a spreadsheet for tracking your campaign
  • Teacher directions and tips

This unit is aligned to CCSS standards for Middle School English/Language Arts.
