“Funny Bunny” is a syllable sort and a flashcard activity for nonsense words. Header cards are included for the six types of syllables plus 12 nonsense words for each type of syllable (a total of 72 cards). Using nonsense words is a great way to make sure your students understand the phonics concepts and a great way to practice their skills. IF YOUR STUDENTS DON’T KNOW ALL OF THE SIX TYPES OF SYLLABLES YET, JUST USE THE HEADERS AND CARDS FOR THE TYPES THEY DO KNOW.
For the syllable sort, lay out the header cards. Students then place the cards under the correct syllable type header card. They should also read the words.
For the “Funny Bunny” activity, add the “Funny Bunny” cards to the word cards and shuffle. There are two variations for this activity:
Variation 1: Students take turns reading the cards one at a time. If they get a “Funny Bunny” card, they get an extra turn. The player with the most cards at the end is the winner.
Variation 2: One student reads cards until they get a “Funny Bunny” card. Then play passes to the next student. The student with the most cards at the end is the winner.
Students can also, if the cards are laminated, use a dry erase marker to circle or underline the letters that told them what type of syllable they have on their card.
Make it more fun by giving players a small candy Easter egg or bunny!
