Funny Stories is a set of 15 one-page stories that even reluctant readers will be motivated to read. Most stories are told in a speech balloon format, or very short paragraphs accompanied by photographs. At the bottom of each story page there are 5 comprehension questions ranging from simple recall to higher levels of thinking. The questions can be used to facilitate a discussion - or students can write the answers on the back of the paper for independent comprehension practice.
My students at the beginning of this year were mainly capable yet reluctant readers, or those who just didn't want to read. After finding that most comprehension worksheets I had access to were not motivating enough for these students to complete independently, I decided to combine their love of humor with photographs I had taken over the last few years. They had a lot of fun with these worksheets, which increased their interest in reading, and led to more reading so that most are now reading chapter books!
