This project can be done as small groups, individually, or even as an assessment performance task - this could work well in English, History, Science, and (I'm sure) many other courses too.
First, students are asked to think of a problem that many people have. Their task is to create an invention to help solve that problem. Then students must do the following: create a name and slogan for the invention, sketch a picture of it, and write a description of what the invention does. Students must create a visual aid that includes all of the required components. It is also fun to have students present their ideas to a "Shark Tank" (inspired by the popular TV show), to see which products/inventions are worthy of moving on to "production".
The handout provides directions for students and a rubric. The rubric assesses students on a 5 point scale in eight separate categories, such as, Originality, Use of Class time, Poster Attractiveness, and Grammar. Research can (and should) also be required during the project. Gathering data on pricing of similar products or copyright on product names and abilities will be important for students to know and find online.
