Imagine one of your students having a 20th birthday party thirteen years in the future. Matt's dad says, "Mrs, Smith, your grade two teacher has something for you." Puzzled, Matt opens a letter he wrote when he was just seven. "Dear Future Me, I am writing this letter to see if I am an astronaut yet. And did Emily and I get married and have kids. . . . " The letters children write to themselves are beautiful and innocent. One student of mine wrote, "Are all the countries living in peace and harmony yet?"
I have included handouts for grades one and two as well as a detailed lesson plan that is easy to adapt. There is also a checklist of things to get kids thinking about how the future might be different (inventions, space travel, jobs, etc.). Enjoy.
