{Geology Earth’s History Geological Time Scale}
Students often have misconceptions about the geological times scale for significant events in Earth’s history. This project uses a calendar year to demonstrate the positioning of the 14 significant events in Earth’s history. Using proportions students are able to calculate the ‘date’ for the event and can then visualize where it lies within relation to the calendar year. This is a powerful simulation for students.
Inquiry Question: How can a calendar year help us to understand the magnitude of geologic time?
Imagine that all of Earth’s history was compressed into one calendar year of 365 days. Then the formation of the Earth (which happened 4.5 billion years ago) would be represented by the first second January 1st, and today would be represented by the instant the clock struck midnight at the end of December 31.
Students will calculate the day of the calendar year for each significant event in Earth’s History. The mini-project begins with a pretest to determine prior knowledge.
