FORBIDDEN words - a math game for GEOMETRY
This game is a fun way to practice vocabulary for GEOMETRY and ensure that students will understand the vocabulary that you use throughout your course.
Fluency with the vocabulary will help high school students excel on assessments and in future college courses. This activity aims to give your students the opportunity to develop this skill with the required vocabulary.
Being able to define or describe the terms and avoid words typically used in the definition requires the students to understand not just the given word, but the ideas and concepts involved.
TWO sets of vocabulary for GEOMETRY, color-coded as shown.
•SET ONE (purple) 36 cards - basic terms
•SET TWO (blue) 43 cards - includes some basic terms plus more advanced words
Use set one to introduce the game and add cards from set two as students become comfortable with finding ways to describe the terms and avoiding the “forbidden words.”
Play the game as described in the rules or play a silent game and require students to illustrate/draw the word (think Pictionary). Either way, your students will benefit from using the words and thinking of ways to get their team to shout out the term. Take advantage of the times that create confusion or when a student can’t think of something to say (that doesn’t include the forbidden words). Open the discussion for the class; “ How else could we describe the term “triangle” without saying the word “three?”
Whatever happens in your class, keep it light and fun.... math doesn’t have to be a boring!
