One of my students' favorite activities!
With plastic or student-made pentominoes (made with template provided), your class will have a blast exploring which of the 12 pentominoes have lines of symmetry, which ones can be formed into a cube without a top, and what their area and different perimeters are. Only ONE pentomino has a different perimeter! Use the paper templates so the kids can physically prove symmetry and cubism to their peers.
An addictive pentomino puzzle is attached. While there are over 2,000 solutions, only a handful of students will figure them out, but they will beg you to allow them time to keep trying. I have even flashed them pages of solutions from the internet for a few seconds at a time to give them a head start. I added 3 puzzle challenge pages for early finishers! They include logic, congruent and symmetrical pentomino figures, and making animals.
