SUMMARY:

Kincaid's “Girl” is one long single sentence of advice a seeming mother imparts to her daughter, only twice interrupted by the girl to ask a question or defend herself. She intends the advice to both help her daughter and scold her at the same time. Kincaid uses semicolons to separate the admonishments and words of wisdom showing the 'mother's' continuous rant. This 'mother' admonishes her daughter to do well in her chores even though she seems to be bent on warning the girl against becoming a “slut.”

This 10th - 12th grade canonized work allows students to reflect on their experience of society's expectations.
