★★★GOAL = Gaining Outstanding Academic Learning
This activity includes 16 practice problems
. Students could work by themselves (self-assessment), with partners, or with groups. This activity helps students to check their understanding of:
Determining whether a given function is exponential growth, decay, or neither. It also asks students to find the y-intercept if the function is an exponential one.
This is an ADVANCED
level. This is due to the fact that the Parent Exponential Function has more than one transformation listed. The given function may be shifted right, left, up, down, stretched, or compressed. The transformed function may have a negative power to indicated that the reciprocal of the base is what represents the growth of decay. The functions may have more than one transformation at the same time.
When finding the y-intercept
, it will only be affected by the different transformations. The "Advanced" students should be able to find the y-intercept without the need to a graphing utility. These students would need to apply their understanding of each transformation on the parent function and come up with the y-intercept easily.
Check out the more advanced GOAL NO PREP - Exponential Growth, Decay, or Neither HERE
as this version will have in addition to the above, horizontal and vertical transformation. This means finding the y-intercept is more challenging.
Each student would set a GOAL
for him/herself and check to see if they met the GOAL
at the end of the practice by coloring in a thermometer
with their score.
The answers are listed and are associated with a QR Code. Students would need a QR reader to scan the QR code and see if they managed to match the question with the correct answer.
This is a great way to review before a quiz or a test. This activity could even be assigned when you're out. It is self monitoring. It is a good practice over a this particular concept.
Research has shown that using self-assessment with students can positively effect self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation levels in students (Rolheiser and Ross).
This activity includes a quiz
over this concept in addition to the answer key. Please check out the attached preview
for the type of questions assessed in this activity.
This activity may be used without the QR code as well
