    Bundle Description

    Students too often skim over or completely skip the excerpts from Goldstein’s book in Section 2, Chapter 9 of Orwell’s fabulous 1984. The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism, although its title is alluring, is sometimes deemed too tedious for young adult readers who page past it consequently missing out on Orwell’s tremendous skill and his important message.

    This bundle offers four differentiated resources to compel students to read and study the excerpts.

    As a teacher, you can use all, some, or have students choose from the four.

    First,

    I’ve created what I believe is the Ultimate Guide to Goldstein’s Book.

    I say that because, I’ve been teaching the novel for over 30 years and each time I’ve discuss this section with students (more than 100 times), I’ve gotten a clearer picture of the ideas that they understand and those that require more clarification.

    With that in mind, I dissected Goldstein’s book and wrote 50 questions for students to respond to as they read.

    That seems like an enormous and tedious task, but the questions can easily be divided into sections and addressed a few at a time.

    The interesting thing about this activity is that it turned out to be for me, what Goldstein’s book is to Winston.

    At the end of chapter 9, Winston remarks that the book

    “had not actually told him anything that he did not know; it had merely systematized the knowledge that he possessed already.”

    I found that after completing the answer key, sorting through all of Goldstein’s explanations and simplifying them, I have a more focused understanding of the concepts.

    Subsequently, I can better explain the section to my kids.

    • There are 8 pages with 50 questions.

    • I use a clear font.

    • I provide space for students’ responses.

    • I have included a key (which is the real value of this resource). The key is 11 pages. I provided bulleted responses in complete sentences.

    • I included page numbers directing students to the discussion in the novel. I use the Signet Classic paperback. If you use a different edition of the novel, it wouldn’t be hard to change them because the questions follow the text.

    Second,

    I created these graphic organizers using PowerPoint 2010 so I could easily manipulate the graphics.

    They can be printed on standard 8.5X11 inch paper.

    These graphic organizers are a fun and effective way to help students navigate Goldstein’s book.

    They can be used independently or with partners or small groups which I find works best.

    I also like to save class time by creating jigsaw groups where small groups become experts on certain pages then break into new groups and share their findings.

    There are 15 pages of tasks:

    • Charts

    • Maps

    • Graphic identification

    • Cycles

    • Fill-ins

    • Application questions

    • Higher-order questions

    • Quotes from the novel

    There are also 15 identical key pages with complete answers.

    To assess student’s completion of the activities, you could present the key as a PowerPoint; however, I suggest you use the Goldstein's Book PowerPoint Presentation:

    Using Powerpoint 2010, I've created a presentation which thoroughly discusses Goldstein's Book and captures students' interest with vibrant colors and alluring graphics.

    There are 61 slides.

    The first is a quote from O'Brien regarding Winston's acquisition of the book.

    Following slides address Chapter 1 Ignorance is Strength and provide discussion of

    --hierarchical society,

    --surveillance,

    --propaganda,

    --the desire for power,

    --and the similarities among the superstates' ideologies.

    --War is Peace is expounded upon with excerpts, paraphrases, and graphics.

    It is a very clear presentation of the information.

    Slides have a black background and contrasting color, clear font.

    PLEASE NOTE; After receiving feedback, I've included teacher notes on the last slide to help with presentation.

    Finally,

    I offer a 1984 Goldstein's Book activity which requires students read to Goldstein's Book and devise a unique way to present the information to "the Brotherhood" (their classmates).

    The directions are to read assigned pages in the text, discuss the information with the comrades in one's group, create an exciting way to efficiently and thoroughly present this information to the Brotherhood.

    Specific questions to be answered are included.

    This assignment is a creative way to look at Goldstein's book.

    The kids love it.

    Some ideas that they've come up with include news casts, interviews, and talk shows.
