PURPOSE AND GOALS
The purpose of this curriculum guide is to provide students with a fundamental knowledge of Greek and Latin root words and affixes that will equip them to determine the meanings of words in context as readers in English language arts, science, and other content areas. Significantly, two thirds of English vocabulary is derived from Greek and Latin. In the sciences and technical realms, this proportion rises to 90%. “An understanding of the core meaning of each root will provide a tool for unlocking the meanings of thousands of words...and provide the reader with a more powerful and useful vocabulary.” (Moore & Moore, Dictionary of Latin and Greek Origins: A Comprehensive Guide to the Classical Origins of English Words. NTC Contemporary Publishing Company, 1997.) Given the extraordinary breadth of reading that students are required or encouraged to do, no “word list” approach can offer a practicable strategy for vocabulary instruction. Research in best practices supports the use of morphological analysis for essential vocabulary development.
