This novel study unit is a complete, integrated lesson plan for three to four weeks of reading/language arts instruction. It is recommended for grades 4 and 5 in whole class, small group or a home school setting; but was originally used by grade 4 Academically Gifted students.
GUESTS is a historical fiction novel about a young Native American boy, coming of age during the time period when settlers arrived in America. It is an excellent novel study for the weeks prior to Thanksgiving! With suggestions for portions of each chapter to be role-played/dialogued (as in a play), the story comes to life for students!
This novel study is an instructional tool for teaching the understanding, application, and practice of reading comprehension strategies and skills with specific emphasis on: figures of speech, genres (legend, folktale, fable), metacognitive strategies, character traits, author's purpose, main idea, supporting details (context clues), punctuation use (italics, periods of ellipses, commas), graphic organizers, and test-taking strategies. The INTRODUCTION details these topics.
Each of the chapter lessons contains: lesson suggestions, DISCUSSION QUESTIONS, ACTIVITES, and TESTS. Also included in the unit are: a Test Answer Key, Portfolio Contents sheet, and a Character Traits Bubble Map. Activities, which are on-going and self-paced, are stored in a folder/portfolio to be submitted by each student at the completion of the novel study. While students work on portfolio activities, the teacher is flexible to work with other students or groups.
The activities and strategies in this novel study unit align with the Common Core Standards ELA for Literacy in grades 4 and 5. It is direct and concise. This novel unit and others like it, can be downloaded from Jan Z's Study Units on the TpT website.
