“G.U.M.s” offer students the opportunity to work together to edit writing samples that not only strengthen students’ grasp on grammar, usage, and mechanics, but also offer a little snapshot of awesome books that they will then want to read and frankly…SHOULD be reading.
I assign one G.U.M. each night (except weekends) for homework, however, you can also use them as bellwork, class starters, group grammar practice, or whatever! More G.U.M.s are coming, so that you will have plenty of skills practice as well as plenty of topics to choose from
Students either take the practice sheets home for homework (I usually tell them how many errors to look for in each one), or we work together to edit the sentences. Once the class agrees on the edits to be made, a volunteer goes up to the board and writes the corrected sentence. I go over all of the edits, explaining the rules that they follow.
You can print out the sheets containing errors for your students and then show the answer keys on the board. Student sheets can also be used as quizzes.
All examples come with an answer key, which can be shared with the class or used as a teacher key.
* 20 sheets for students, each containing two lengthy examples for corrections
* 20 answer key sheets
