Gummy Bear Genetics is a lab used to investigate how traits are inherited. The lab replicates Gregor Mendel's famous pea plant experiments. This lab should be taught to introduce genetics as teachers can use this as phenomena to spark student interest in genetics. This lab is fully aligned with NGSS MS LS 3-2: Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation.
Students work on making predictions, forming conclusion with evidence, calculating probability, and collaborating to solve an inquiry based lab
Teachers only need paper lunch bags and gummy bears.
Lesson includes ideas on extension, reflection, modification, and even sample notes and a key to follow the lab.
