NO MATS? NO BALANCE BEAMS? NO PROBLEM!
Gymnastics is usually a unit that places students and teachers outside their comfort zone. For students, it seems to a confidence and self-esteem issue. They are self-conscious about people watching and making fun of them. For teachers, it seems to be the lack of experience teaching the subject. Using the character words below I talk about each one briefly and how they relate to helping each other through each task. I spread them out over the course of a week or so. Talk about two to three each day. This way the students are not overwhelmed and they relate the words to each activity they are trying to perform. They work well when you have those “teachable moments“ with a group that can’t seem to get along. Also, I explain that social and emotional wellbeing is just as important as physical wellbeing. If we treat each other well and work together we can accomplish more. You choose to use these signs as you wish. I place them near my opening area and around the room to help remind all students of their importance. Students might be trying these activities for the first time and in doing so need a little more encouragement. The character words go a long way in helping the students through the skills and helping each other. The ultimate goal is to be NICE.
