The following six-page study guide on Gabriel Garcia Marquez's short story "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" includes an anticipation guide on page one, comprehension questions on pages two, three, four, and five, and discussion questions on page six. The anticipation guide prepares students for the story and theme-related topics of discussion posed in the short story. The anticipation guide features "before" statements that students will write whether they agree or disagree with each statement and explain why. Students are asked to complete the "after" statements after they have reflected on the work.
The comprehension questions on pages two, three, four, and five have a few low level comprehension questions on story (e.g. How does the village react to the angel?), but many questions are higher level, critical thinking questions (e.g. What is ironic about where Pelayo and Elisenda make the angel sleep?) and assess students' analysis of the work's conflict, figurative language, imagery, indirect characterization, inferences, mood, plot, setting, situational irony, and subtext. The second page also requires students to look up and find the definitions for vocabulary words that they might not know prior to reading the story to understand how these words are used in the short story. The sixth page contains discussion questions on the work's characterization, genre, satirical aspects, subtitle, symbolism, and themes.
This packet can be used as a formative assessment to prepare students for a summative assessment of a 10-question multiple choice quiz that is available as a separate purchase by clicking here
