Students read about different types of galaxies, try to classify pictures of real galaxies, and answer analysis questions. Covers both galaxies and scale of objects in the universe for middle school astronomy units!
First, students read (2 pages) about how scientists classify galaxies as elliptical, spiral, or irregular. Then, they complete 18 text-dependent questions on a worksheet. Finally, they are given 10 cards with galaxy pictures, and based on the information from the reading, they attempt to classify the galaxies. When they are finished, they can check with your key to see how close they got! It isn't easy to classify galaxies, but the fun is in the challenge!
Make a class set of galaxy cards (one set per pair of students) and reuse each class.
This activity was highly adapted from the somewhat complicated galaxy activity developed by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. However, this version been significantly simplified and streamlined for a MIDDLE SCHOOL audience.
