Teaching Greek and Latin roots is a high bang-for-your-buck instructional strategy. According to research half-some estimates are higher, as much as 75%-of all English words contain the familiar patterns of Greek and Latin roots. Because prefixes, roots, and suffixes have distinctive features and consistent patterns, students who have an awareness of them become skilled at linking the pronunciation, spelling, and meaning of many challenging words (Bear, Invernizzi, Templeton, & Johnston, 2000). In short, students can coordinate sound and sense when they find new words.
This course of study was developed to be a spiraling curriculum spread over the three middle school years with two sets taught each year. Set one contains 100 roots taught in ten lessons. Sets two through six follow the ten lesson pattern, but contain 50 new roots and 50 review roots from a previous set. In this way, students add to their knowledge base while reviewing and solidifying previous learning.
