During the course of this project, students will create and record a musical composition using the app GarageBand that will have both a pentatonic folk song melody, and an improvised or newly composed section. The student or teacher will determine the form for the final composition (depending on ability level of students). The student will also record background tracks to accompany their performance using their knowledge of simple chord changes. Students will then use their background accompaniment to create a B Section that they can improvise over, either as a recording or live in class. This project will likely take several lessons to complete depending on ability of your students and the availability of iPads.
I've included detailed instructions on using GarageBand, a student checklist, Student Scoring Rubric, and Student Reflection worksheet.
To complete this project, students will need:
-How to play at least one pentatonic melody on an instrument such as the recorder
-Access to iPads with GarageBand
-Introductory knowledge of improvisation using the notes of the pentatonic scale
