This is a one or two lesson poster for using GarageBand for iOS to learn and play using the Pentatonic scale. It is meant as a overhead projection resource for your students to guide them through this activity, independently and at their own pace.
Students can create a drum track (either Drums or Smart Drums) that are reflective of the type of drum textures that are typical of Chinese Pentatonic writing. (How innovative do you want your students to be?)
Students could even record their own live drums with the Audio Recorder.
Add a melody track using the keyboard instrument and choosing the scale function: major or minor Pentatonic.
Some students would prefer using the piano keyboard directly as they are capable of knowing which notes are within the Pentatonic scale in a variety of keys.
Record the melody, possibly contrasting to the drum rhythms.
Add (Master) echo and reverb, as desired - little is more.
Extensions could include ABA structure for contrasting themes, and use of the Arpeggiator to add a background chordal flow to the piece.
Adding their recorded composition to video is always meaningful, e.g., iMovie or a variety of apps that allow adding sound to movies or a picture, e.g., ThingLink.
