Does your school have a garden? If so, this is a great opportunity to have your students do “science.” With this project students can assess their school garden with simple equipment and a camera. The goal is to create a presentation that documents the productivity of the garden. By using Google Drive, have students create and share photos of this project, document plantings, labeling dimensions and show the harvest. Because everyone’s garden is different, editable files are included to adjust data sheets to fit your school garden. A major benefit for your school is that the garden gets documented year in and year out as a class project. Additionally, lessons on crop rotation can be built for the following year by referring back to this project. If you write grants for funding, this activity is essential as provides quantitative evidence and creates artifacts of student learning.
