I read this with a group of students reading at the 5th grade level, and it was very challenging for them, and they needed a lot of support and guidance, but since we worked entirely as a group, it ended up being an extremely engaging and beneficial experience- they hung on to the book’s every word, and learned a ton of new vocabulary!
This document is for use in public classrooms or home school classrooms to get students thinking more deeply about the books that they are reading. Analysis of texts, author’s purpose, and language are extraordinarily important, and the rigor at which we provide our instruction must match the high expectations we all have for our students. This product is not intended to be a substitute for the awesome teaching you provide, just a tool.
The design of this packet is done with the needs of all in mind, and so the stimulation on the student pages has been limited, the space for answers is significant, and the work is divided in such a way that “packets” are not given. Each student hand out is one page, front and back; this is to help keep kids from feeling overwhelmed, and to help you collect and review student work often enough to use it formatively. I hope you enjoy.
