How to Use: Laminate cards for durability. I like to mount the cards on construction paper to make them a bit bigger, then laminate.
Directions: Shuffle cards, so that they are not in ABC order. Make sure the “Gather” or “Gobble” cards are spread out evenly throughout the deck of cards. Place all the letter cards in a pile face down. Students will take turns in a small group picking up a letter card. When they pick up a card, they must say the letter name (i.e. Uppercase letter A). When the student correctly identifies the card, they keep it. Each student will collect cards for their “personal collection”. If a student picks up the “Gather” acorn card, they get to take all the cards that the other students have collected. Those students will continue to take from the pile to recollect cards. If a student picks up the “Gobble” turkey card, they lose all their cards and put them in the “lost” pile (away from the initial letter card pile). The student with the most cards at the end of the game, wins!
Hints: Use the “Gather” and “Gobble” cards at your own judgment, depending on your group of students. Some students may get discouraged if they get cards taken away or have to put cards back. I typically only put 2 of each “Gather” and “Gobble” cards in my pile!
