This three-part task requires students to synthesize information from Sandra Cisneros' novel "The House on Mango Street" and tie it to three informational texts about gender inequality in Latino culture. The articles also discuss machismo (macho men), familismo (family first), and patriarchal societies.
First, students collaborate in forming a claim about the women of Mango Street and then the men. Then they search for textual evidence to support the claims.
Second, the teacher models and guides students in annotating the three informational texts. A purpose for reading is set in each text.
Third, students complete a graphic organizer for a constructed response.
