This file includes a viewing guide for students to complete as they watch Newsom's Miss Representation (2011). This file also includes an answer key.
According to Netflix, Miss Representation "[e]xplore[s] how the mainstream media's often disparaging portrayals of women contribute to the under-representation of females in positions of leadership." The documentary is 90 minutes and can be streamed using Netflix. As a result, many students can watch the documentary and complete the viewing guide independently or in class.
The viewing guide includes pre-viewing discussion questions (3), viewing questions (23), and post-viewing questions (3). The Word document is editable, so you can choose which questions are best for your students. The handout is designed to keep students engaged while they analyze the documentary's argument and consider their own position.
Once completed, I often have a graded discussion over the documentary where students use the viewing guide to inform and shape their opinions.
