This is a critical thinking vocabulary activity designed to help students develop a deeper, more conceptual understanding of how gene expression and protein synthesis are regulated processes. This vocabulary strategy requires students to use critical thinking and high-level processing skills. In this game, students have a set of cards with a variety of terms on them that are associated with gene expression and regulation. They also have a set of “connection boards” with basic graphic organizers and a set of instructions for completing a “connection” task with that card. The students use those Connection Boards and the set of vocabulary cards to complete each task. The goal is to create a fuller and more conceptual idea of gene expression by requiring students to make connections between various components of gene expression and regulation. This activity should be used after you have taught gene expression and students have notes and knowledge of protein synthesis and gene expression. See my “Gene Expression and Regulation Graphic Organizer and Notes Page” at www.biologylessons.org for help teaching this complex content.
