Are you tired of students supplying the same mundane examples in their writing? To elevate their ability to move beyond a broad concept to relevant and meaningful specifics, prompt them to consider the information they do have about these general topics. Some pairing may be useful for the first portion. Then use the models to show how to develop a position effectively using claim, evidence, and commentary (all three of which I ask my students to label in the model since we have covered C, E, and C repeatedly by the time we do this exercise). I originally developed this multi-part lesson for my advanced students, but it highlights the best practices for all writers.
