I used this packet to teach A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown, A Place to Stand by Jimmy Santiago Baca, and The Day Freedom Died by Charles Lane. Students chose the book they were most interested in. They met in groups to discuss what happened in each section of the book, how that section related to the two essential questions in the packet, and to summarize each section they read. At the end, I had the students participate in a socratic seminar around the two essential topics. The students had a great time seeing how the three books relate to the essential questions. This really helped build the students synthesis skills.
