These pages will turn vocab. into a game while promoting the use of context clues and synonyms for meanings to unfamiliar words that either the teachers or students choose. Whether it's with the whole class, a small group, or an individual, these vocab. sets (3 different sets, 2 pages each) will teach students how to use synonyms, or substitute words, rather than having them use the dictionary-although they could still use a dictionary, OF COURSE! While teaching vocab. in this fashion, I often find students saying, "I know what that means, but I don't know how to 'put it'." But I also hear them say, "YES," when their synonym was close to my "reveal."
Teachers provide words (or students choose), students refer to "lifted" sentences provided by the teacher or book, and students will make a "best guess" for a synonym; then the teacher confirms the final "definition," giving the final say. Students love to see if they GOT IT. They also enjoy putting the words into groups as a separate activity.
