Generosity is the character trait we use for December, but you can use it during any month. This is a good one to use as a reminder to kids about how they should spend their time, kind words, attention and sometimes money to help others.
We read one book each week and also talk about one of the quotes each week. You can also find some of these books if you search the title on www.youtube.com where they are read aloud and shown to students.
We make a monthly bulletin board about the character trait each month. I post the definition in the center of the board, then add one quote each week in each corner. You can use the colored versions, or copy the black & white versions onto colored paper. Students can write their responses to each weekly quote on post-it notes that we then stick around each quote.
I read the books aloud to students and then we talk about the character trait as it is shown or used in the book. There are some books we read more than once.
Students can also talk about times they gave their time, kind words, attention, or even items to someone else to show generosity.
My kids get a brag tag when they have shown generosity repeatedly. You can also keep a jar to hold warm fuzzies (pom pon balls) each time kids show generosity over the course of the month. When we fill the jar as a classroom, the kids get a treat (like extra recess, etc.). There are cards kids can fill out when they show generosity and then a “winner” can be drawn each week for a prize!
You can also get personalized pencils through the Oriental Trading Company with each monthly topic!
