NO-PREP LESSON! PPT, exit ticket, genetic tree activity, embedded video clip, visuals, and check for understanding questions!
In this PPT students learn the relationships between genes, DNA, and chromosomes. Plenty of real-life examples, visuals, and clips allow students to have a firm grasp of these often confusing relationships.
Prior to teaching students vocabulary, we all participate in a 10-minute activity. I drew out a big tree on chart paper with various branches and handed out a "leaf" to each student. Students learn four common traits that are determined by genes and map out their own genes. At the conclusion, students follow the branches on the class tree and place their genes on the gene tree. They loved this activity and it kept them interested and engaged for the duration of class!!
