Extend your studies in DNA, Genetics, and mutations with this fascinating project!

2 versions of this project are included. The first includes only human genetic disorders. The second includes mutations that are found in humans and animals such as red hair. The classic version of this project covers only genetic disorders, but I've since decided to expand in order to emphasize the idea that not all mutations lead to health problems.

Project packet includes:

  • Teacher Tips (notes on which disorders are easier/harder to research)
  • Student introduction letter (1 page)
  • Brief descriptions of each disorder (4 pages)
  • Class sign up sheet (1 page)
  • Student research sheet (2 pages)
  • Rubric (1 page)

Purchase includes editable (Keynote) and PDF versions.

Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism. Emphasis is on conceptual understanding that changes in genetic material may result in making different proteins. Assessment does not include specific changes at the molecular level, mechanisms for protein synthesis, or specific types of mutations.
