Effective for evolution, reproduction, and ecosystem/ecology units!
This reading is targeted for a middle school level student, and aims to simplify the idea that even organisms that look alike are actually genetically different. Many teachers find this a difficult concept for middle-schoolers, so the ideas of diversity within a species and the importance of genetic diversity are brought down to a pretty basic understanding. After students read the article and discuss it, ask students to think of several more examples of diversity within a species, and how this could lead to natural selection.
